Republican and Pro-Choice can the I be both?

I am a proud Black Republican! However, is it possible to be a fiscal conservative, a believer in small government, and minimal government intervention in our private lives and because of the latter be pro-choice, because I am? Can I be a Republican and pro-choice? When you decide to become a Republican do you automatically have to accept all of the beliefs of the Religious Right? I do not believe that their ideology should influence the Republican agenda. Many Republican politicians cater to their issues just to get elected, but live their lives in what seems like the opposite of what they promulgate in front of their constituents. I am a Christian, although I do not attend church every Sunday, and I do not think that abortion is ok, but that is my opinion and what I will teach my children. I will not tell other women and men what they should do in their lives. Not everyone believes as I do. Who are we to pass laws that restrict individual choices, when we as Republicans, again, believe in minimal government intervention in private lives? Many anti-abortion advocates are quick to fight against abortion but do not accept that women and men make this choice because they are not in a position to provide for the child and may end up on welfare and food stamps. Then the rest of the Republicans hold such contempt towards those on public assistance. There are so many children born to parents who are not worthy of their children. There are too many children who are moved around in multiple foster homes and are never adopted. How come anti-abortionists do not adopt children in greater numbers? Who are we to tell pregnant women what to do with their lives, when they are the only ones who know what is best for them? I wonder what other Black Republicans think. I welcome your comments.

Syreeta, I am in the same boat with you on the abortion issue. My personal conviction on the matter is that abortion is killing an unborn human being. However I accept that others have a different conviction, therefore I don't want Roe vs Wade overturned, because making abortion illegal again will not stop abortion, only criminalize women and doctors with a different personal conviction than ours. Strictly speaking I am a Libertarian, which is kind of like a social liberal and fiscal conservative Republican. I am also a "Ron Paul" Republican, again a Libertarian leaning Republican. If I am not mistaken, Colin Powell is pro-choice and affirmative action, so there is room under the GOP tent for moderate Republicans like yourself, as i see it.

I do not agree with abortion and those who practice it by taking taxes to provide it. If a woman decides to have an abortion she should pay the full cost of it herself or take the man to court. Women no longer have to travel out of state and incur added expenses as it was before all states legalized abortion. Your arguement that men and women make the decision to have an abortion because they are not in a position to provide for the child does not hold up any longer. There are many methods available and less costly to taxpayers and individuals, if they would wise up and think with their heads instead of their passions.

Morality can not be legislated. Christians have their moral laws called the Ten Commandments. If you are a true Republican, you stand up for the party's tenet of personal responsibility. "At the end of the day", abortion issues should be between the man, woman, and doctor. Taxpayers should not be forced to pay for someone's irresponsibilties.

The Prevention First Act should be supported so that women and girls can get the education and accessibility they need for Plan B, the pill that stops a female's egg from reaching a male's sperm. This pill can be taken up to 3 days past unprotected sexual intercourse. Abortion for rape and incest can be drastically reduced and prevented if this information is provided. I would support this Act with my taxes.

a woman's education should not stop upon fertilization.

ideally, Social Reproduction (the passing on of common cultural values) should take place in the home while young.

but even as i do not subscribe to a full fledged abdication of responsibility to a mythical village, i'd still like to think we as members of a conscious community can share available wisdom and pertinent knowledge to help foster optimal decision-making.
